With a career that spans opera, musical theatre, jazz and folk, singer/songwriter Monika Wall has a deep well to draw from. Her music has been described as cinematic with each song creating a vignette of sound and mood. Since her call to songwriting, when 3 unknown songs woke her out of her sleep insisting to be heard, she has allowed the lyrics to dictate her style. Simultaneously contagious and layered, her music crosses and blurs the line between folk, pop and jazz sharing similarities with Norah Jones, Gabrielle Shonk, Rose Cousins, Eva Cassidy and Pink Martini’s China Forbes.
Her songs have been heard on national radio and concert stages, festivals and house concerts in North America and Europe.(recently Nu Sounds Festival, Winnipeg International Jazz Festival, Thompson Summer Concert Series, Lyric Theatre Summer Concerts, EMCA Concert Series)
In her sophomore album ‘Earth’, the first in an upcoming series of the four albums centered around the Elements she speaks of the search of being grounded in the middle of life which she describes as “a time of constant quest to find balance, integrity, purpose and contentment.” Her voice effortlessly lifts to soaring heights and soulful lows while her courageously mined songwriting of conquering fear and seeking hope has a subtle yet always present spirituality.
Monika Walls’ songs have both power and intimacy. There is a timeless quality which makes her music hauntingly familiar while retaining her own personal stamp of quality and integrity. The epic journey from Puccini to Porter to her own soulful songwriting has the thread of a spirit born to make music and a quest to find the way to reach the deepest caverns of the heart.
