The West End Cultural Centre is thrilled to welcome local klezmer sensation Finjan back to our stage. On Sunday, September 22nd, the quintet will bring their masterful instrumental technique to the WECC for an evening of music that is sure to bring you right back to the old country.
Finjan came together in the north end of Winnipeg in 1982 and became the first group to spread the Klezmer sound across Canada. Their debut album, Crossing Selkirk Avenue (Red House Records) was released in 1993 and years later, with five albums, two Juno nominations, and a Western Canadian Music Award, they’ve toured North America countless times as the preeminent kelzmer sound. But they haven’t limited themselves to only concerts. Finjan has performed on A Prairie Home Companion, The Lonesome Pine Specials, and in the movie The Outside Chance of Maximillian Glick.
Known for their high level of musicianship and entertaining shows, Finjan finds creative ways to thrill and inspire their audiences by mixing the old and new. They combine the sounds of Eastern Europe and the American Yiddish Theater. With scintillating instrumentation and soulful vocals, they created music that was original, fresh, yet steeped in the traditional. Their wild solos, swing tempos, powerful rhythms and rich harmonies made them one of the most exciting bands to hit the klezmer scene.
