Stephen Fearing and the Sentimentals

Singer-songwriter, folk. Gifted storyteller and musical nomad.

For fans of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, Bill Bourne, Don Amero, James Keelaghan, Donovan Woods, The Sadies.

Renowned Canadian songwriter Stephen Fearing is poised to once again captivate listeners with the release of his next album, The Empathist. The 10-track record, produced in collaboration with Grammy-nominated drummer Ken Coomer (Wilco, Uncle Tupelo), showcases Fearing’s ability to blend heartfelt storytelling with rich, immersive soundscapes. Recorded in Nashville over a whirlwind week, The Empathist features contributions from longtime Blackie & The Rodeo Kings bassist John Dymond and Nashville multi-instrumentalist Jim Hoke, whose mastery of pedal steel, piano, and saxophone adds depth and texture to the album.

Following the release of The Empathist, Fearing will hit the road with his longtime collaborators, the award-winning Danish indie-folk band The Sentimentals. Their dynamic partnership, which began in 2018, has lit up stages across Europe and Canada, bringing a unique fusion of classic Tin Pan Alley songwriting and innovative folk elements to life. Their collaboration was first celebrated on Fearing’s 2022 album Vejpoesi (Danish for “Road Poems”), recorded over three days in Denmark’s Maskinhallen theater. Fearing and The Sentimentals have developed a distinctive sound, blending tradition and experimentation into performances that captivate audiences night after night.

As Stephen Fearing and The Sentimentals tour The Empathist, fans can expect an emotionally charged live experience highlighting the creative risks and bold musical interplay that have defined Fearing’s career. With each performance, they continue to push the boundaries of roots music, weaving together authenticity and innovation in a way that resonates deeply with listeners.

Scott Nolan
Acclaimed singer-songwriter, poet, multi-instrumentalist, and visual artist Scott Nolan has released eight critically acclaimed albums and is known for intimate, engaging performances and for humorous between-songs patter. His songs have been recorded by Hayes Carll, Mary Gauthier, and William Prince; he’s produced albums for William Prince, Watermelon Slim, and Stephen Fearing. Hayes Carll describes Scott as “a barroom prophet and a midnight revivalist, a bluesman with heart and an eye for detail.”

Meisha and the Spanks w/Tinge
Apr

8:00 PM20:00

Meisha and the Spanks w/Tinge

Meisha and the Spanks w/ Tinge

Punk, indie rock, riot grrrrl. Indigenous fronted.

For fans of Black Belt Eagle Scout, Zoon, Bikini Kill, Mobina Galore, The Pack AD, L7, Babes in Toyland.

Meisha and the Spanks

Based in Calgary/Treaty 7, Miesha and The Spanks are a garage-rock two-piece who turn it all the way up. Shaking the rafters with her radiant range, Miesha Louie simultaneously wails on the mic while she riffs on her flying V, as Sean Hamilton’s performative but hard-as-heck hitting drums also captivate the crowd - revealing their undeniable chemistry on stage. High-energy performances paired with catchy power-pop sing-a-long choruses make them at home on big festival stages as well as sweaty dive bars - and they have played plenty of both!

The release cycle of the latest album Unconditional Love In Hi-Fi has taken them across Canada and into the US, UK, Germany, Sweden, and Poland. They’ve played everywhere from 80-4000  capacity venues this year, including the Burt Block Party with Billy Talent in Winnipeg MB,  CBC’s “Come Toward The Fire” Indigenous showcase at the Chan Centre in Vancouver with  Black Belt Eagle Scout and Zoon, and support to Bif Naked on her Alberta club tour dates, to name a few.

Whether it’s an all ages punk show or theatre showcase, Miesha and The Spanks command the audiences attention, appealing to their inner angst or nostalgia for a time when their heart’s were on fire.

Tinge

Followers of Tinge may be forgiven for believing the band’s moment has arrived. The songs of Veronica Blackhawk, an Anishinaabe multi-hyphenate from Lake of the Woods, Ontario feel timeless; yet, they sit so well amongst their sonic contemporaries that it’s hard to believe they've been over half a decade in the making. Their brand of indie rock is as raw and sorrowful as it is catchy and vast, drawing comparisons to Big Thief, Camp Cope, and Julien Baker.

Tinge’s path to the stage was a winding one. Coming from a turbulent home, Blackhawk (they/she) always found themselves grasping for a sense of belonging. Hopping from town to town, they would make friends and then move away; it was in this cycle that they met their future bandmates in high school classrooms. In the years that followed, Blackhawk wrote a collection of music during one of their life's calmer periods, attempting to reconcile their good and bad experiences through brutally honest and sincere songwriting.

In 2021, still craving kindship and community, Blackhawk built up the courage to reach out to the musicians with which they had felt the strongest bond—the guys from highschool—and a band was formed. The trio recorded their debut EP Big Deep Sigh at House of Wonders, with producer Adam Fuhr at the helm.

Amanda Rheaume Album Release

Amanda Rheaume Album Release

Roots, folk. Anthems of underdogs.

For fans of Diana Krall, Sierra Noble, Don Amero.

Recipient of the 2024 Spirit of Folk Award, 2023 Canadian Folk Music Award for Indigenous Songwriter of the Year and the 2023 Capital Music Awards’ Album of the Year, Amanda Rheaume’s rootsy, guitar-driven ballads introduce crucial dimensions to the world of Heartland Rock. In a genre characterized by anthems of underdogs, assumptions and unfair advantages, Rheaume’s sound and story radically expand the boundaries, both geographic and cultural, to make space for new perspectives on resistance and resilience. A Citizen of the Métis Nation, and an active and proud member of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, Rheaume’s music is indeed from the heart, and the land.

First a songwriter, Rheaume comes from a long line of tireless, transformational organizers and activists. She carries this lineage forward in her ever-growing role as a crucial builder of Indigenous music infrastructure and community. From the International Indigenous Music Summitand Ishkode Records, to the National Indigenous Music Office, the goal of raising Indigenous sovereignty in the music industry drives all of Rheaume’s work.

Rheaume has released 5 full-length albums and four EPs, all while fostering a self-managed career travelling on numerous tours and achieving many milestones. 2013’s Keep a Fire was nominated for a JUNO Award and won a Canadian Folk Music Award for Indigenous Songwriter of the Year. As a follow-up to 2022’s The Spaces In Between, Rheaume is currently writing her next full-length album, set to release in 2025.

Show Lineup:

Old Man Hat

Old Man Hat is a singer, songwriter and activist based out of Winnipeg, Manitoba. With an emphasis on working-class solidarity, Old Man Hat blends social commentary and fingerstyle guitar playing to create contemporary protest songs.

Mulligrub

Mulligrub is a 3-piece rock band from Winnipeg. The band’s confessional lyrics blend the sensibilities of 90s alternative emo with melodies influenced by hooky power pop ballads. Three-part harmonies are combined with a DIY garage feel and heart-on-your-sleeve lyrics to create an intimate and dynamic sound. The current band lineup is Kelly Campbell on guitar and vocals, Natalie Smith on bass, and Riley Hill on drums.

OP-ED

Headlining the night, OP-ED is a protest rock band founded by Canadian-Palestinian refugee Tarek Abdel Aziz to bring stories of resilience and defiance to the forefront of the music scene. Known for their unapologetically bold lyrics and powerful rock energy, OP-ED’s songs speak truth to power with a focus on Palestinian rights.

The Arrogant Worms

The Arrogant Worms

Comedy and satire

This show is not part of the Season Pass or Punch Card offers.

The Arrogant Worms have spent over three decades making fun of a big dumb world. Their songs have been played on the radio, the internet, and in outer space (on the space shuttle Endeavour).

The Worms began at Queen’s University in 1991 when some members of the student cabaret group, The Queen’s Players, started writing songs and sketches for the campus radio station CFRC. Soon the group became The Arrogant Worms (Chris Patterson, Mike McCormick, and Trevor Strong) who have since toured ceaselessly across Canada (and select other parts of the world), released 13 albums, and recorded with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.

Their song, The Last Saskatchewan Pirate, has been covered by bands such as Captain Tractor and The Longest Johns, and their Happy Happy birthday song is a viral sensation with over one hundred million views of the various fan videos on YouTube. More than thirty years after they began, The Arrogant Worms continue to provide tuneful and silly escapism for everyone who needs it.

For fans of the Fringe Festival, indie movies, National Film Board, Fraggle Rock, Brothers Quai

Told through beautifully handcrafted puppets and ever engaging original music, One For Sorrow, Two For Joy plays like a whimsical carnival ride that is wound up and then released to tell the bitter-sweet story of a woman alone on the prairies of western Canada.

Born at the turn of the 20th century, Willow Mae O’Reily tosses caution and expectation to the prairie winds and makes a life of her own during a time ripe for change, first as a nurse on the battlefields of WWI, then as a farmer in the foothills of Alberta.

“It is like watching the mechanics of our own heart-sprung cuckoo-clock.” (Peter Balkwell, Old Trout Puppet Workshop).

Produced by Long Grass Studio. Created by Juanita Dawn, Jolene “Little Miss” Higgins, Kyla Read, Jocelyn Mah and Stephanie Elgersma.

Performed by Jolene “Little Miss” Higgins, Juanita Dawn and Jocelyn Mah.

Runtime 50 minutes + talkback after the show. Ask the artists questions! How did the build those puppets?! Where do they get their inspiration?!

Gregorian: Pure Chants

Gregorian: Pure Chants

MODO-LIVE Presents:
Gregorian: Pure Chants

For almost 25 years, GREGORIAN have thrilled millions of people worldwide with their choreographed shows and their ability to switch seamlessly from classical chorales to pop and rock songs. Their concerts have set new standards.

With over 2,000 shows in 35 countries and more than 10 million albums sold, GREGORIAN are the most successful choir in the world.

In November and December 2024, GREGORIAN will continue with their PURE CHANTS World Tour in Canada and in the USA.

Frank Peterson, the creator and producer of GREGORIAN says: “Our Pure Chants concerts bring the most popular GREGORIAN classics in an atmospheric and tranquil sound environment. Pure Chants concerts are extremely peaceful, yet spectacular and unite the audience with the most beautiful melodies in the world.”

The idea for GREGORIAN was born when Frank Peterson visited the royal monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial in Spain in 1989. Wandering through the medieval monastery and castle complex and listening to contemporary music on his Walkman, he found the inspiration for the sound experiment of mixing ancient Gregorian music with modern music.

Peterson first realized his idea with Michael Cretu and the worldwide sound phenomenon "Enigma". Their first album "MCMXC a.D." was released in 1990 and quickly became a worldwide success. "MCMXC a.D." was number 1 in 41 different countries and went 57 times platinum and 45 times gold. It is considered as the most successful German album of all time worldwide.

This gigantic success paved the way for GREGORIAN to take the musical idea one step further and to establish it as an independent music act. In 1999, with the start of production on the first album "Masters Of Chant", Frank Peterson seamlessly built on the success of "Enigma".

In the following years, GREGORIAN has sold over 10 million CDs and 7 DVDs worldwide and achieved gold and platinum status in 24 different countries.

At the end of 2024 and thus in time for their Anniversary World Tour in 2025, Frank Peterson will release a new GREGORIAN album. The album will include new songs as well as re-recordings of some well-known GREGORIAN classics.

Madeleine Roger "Nerve" Album Release

Madeleine Roger

With openers Keri Latimer, Kris Ulrich, and Taylor Jackson in a songwriter’s circle.

Singer-songwriter / Folk-Roots / Americana

For fans of Sarah Harmer, Anais Mitchell, Kathleen Edwards, Aoife O'Donovan.

Madeleine Roger (she/her) is a singer-songwriter from Winnipeg, Canada. While skillfully accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, it is her artistry as a songwriter that can silence a room, uniting her lyrical prowess with breathtaking melodies that linger long after they are sung.

Her newest collection of songs is a deeply personal body of work examining every nook and cranny of love and loss. It is unflinchingly honest, and is the result of three years of soul-digging, experimentation, and fine-tuning - Madeleine has poured over every word. Nerve, the album created in the process (out August 2024) is her sophomore release, and it touches the exposed nerve left over from a breakup with a long-term lover and musical collaborator, the death of a soul-friend, the secret of an unrequited love, months of caring for a dying grandparent, and finding a curious peace in spite of it. It was produced by Josh Kaufman (Anaïs Mitchell, Bob Weir, Bonny Light Horseman) and recorded in four days in Kingston NY by engineer D. James Goodwin (The National, Fruit Bats, The Hold Steady).

She has toured extensively across Canada, Europe, and the UK sharing her music live at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, Shetland Island Folk Festival, Vancouver Island Music Festival, Stan Rogers Folk Festival, Summerfolk Festival of Arts and Crafts, among others. She is also a regular collaborator with JUNO award winning string quartet The Fretless, appearing with them in performances and on recordings as a vocalist and co-writer.

English Songwriter of the Year nominee (2020 Canadian Folk Music Awards) Producer of the Year nominee (2019 Western Canadian Music Awards)
